Frequently Asked Questions

Proposition KNP

Q: When is the election?

A: Election day is on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.

Q: Where do I vote?

A: The County Clerk provides you with this information. If you cannot locate your voter registration card, please contact Voter Registration - Johnson County 660-747-7414; Pettis County 660-826-5000 ext 918. If you are not available to vote in person on August 5, 2025, you can request an absentee ballot beginning 6 weeks prior to the election date. The deadline for absentee voting in the Johnson County Clerk’s Office is 5:00 pm on the day before the election - https://www.jococourthouse.com/AbsenteeVoting.htm

Q: How much is the Proposition KNP Levy asking the community to vote on?

A: The community will vote to approve an increase of the operating tax levy by $0.30 per $100 of assessed valuation.

Q: What happens if Proposition KNP doesn’t pass?

A: 1) The district’s eligibility for approximately $3.5 million annually in Heavily Impacted Aid will be in significant jeopardy in years ahead. 2) The components listed on the overview page will not be included in the new high school project. This means students will have to travel to the existing high school / future middle school to use the existing academic spaces listed and the existing sports facilities listed. Youth and school-aged sports facilities will continue to be overcrowded and overrun by demand, as they are currently. That demand will only increase.

Q: How is the tax levy calculated on my property?

A: Taxes are calculated on the assessed value of your property, which is determined by the county assessor, not the market value (or what you paid for it). You should look at your property tax receipt to determine the actual assessed valuation of your property.

Q: What is the current levy, and what would it be if Proposition KNP passes?

A: The current levy is $3.50, and it would be $3.80 if Proposition KNP passes. If passed, the Knob Noster School District levy will remain, by far, the lowest school tax levy in Johnson County and still be one of the lowest in the region and state, approximately 30% lower than the regional average.

Q: When will the projects be completed?

A: Completion timeline is currently August 2026.

Q: What does it take to pass a levy issue?

A: A levy issue must receive a simple majority, or 50% plus one vote.

Q: How will the ballot language read?

A: “Proposition KNP - Shall the Board of Education of Knob Noster R-VIII School District of Johnson County, Missouri be authorized to increase the operating tax levy ceiling to $3.80 per $100 of assessed valuation according to the 2025 assessment for the purpose of constructing specific academic and athletic components including Agriculture, Manufacturing, and Building Trades, Wrestling Facility, Youth Sports Facilities, Running Track, Football Field, and Stadium, to be included with the new Knob Noster High School which is currently under construction?

If this question is approved, the operating tax levy of the District is estimated to increase by $0.30 per $100 of assessed valuation.”
